Veteran actor Ian McKellen was hospitalized Monday (Jun. 17, 2024) evening following a fall during a performance in London’s West End.
The 85-year-old actor fell from the stage while performing in Player Kings at the Noël Coward Theatre, according to statements from representatives of both McKellen and the play.
McKellen, who is currently portraying Sir John Falstaff in a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, began his 12-week run at the theater in April.
Medical professionals anticipate that McKellen will “make a speedy and full recovery” following a scan, the statement confirmed. The actor is reportedly in “good spirits.”
Due to the incident, Player Kings‘ performance on Tuesday (Jun. 18, 2024) has been canceled to allow McKellen to rest. The statement expressed gratitude to “doctors Rachel and Lee, who were present in the audience, and to all the venue staff for their support.”
The BBC reported that McKellen was engaged in a fight scene involving the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when he lost his footing and fell off the front of the stage. He cried out in pain, prompting staff to rush to his aid as the house lights illuminated the theater. The audience was informed that the remainder of the show was canceled and were subsequently evacuated.
Ian McKellen, whose illustrious acting career spans several decades, has appeared in numerous Shakespeare adaptations both on screen and on stage. He is perhaps best known for his iconic role as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films.
