Acclaimed actress Nicole Kidman was celebrated with the American Film Institute’s (AFI) Life Achievement Award, marking her as the inaugural Australian actor to receive this prestigious recognition.
The ceremony in Hollywood saw the Moulin Rouge star being honored by none other than Meryl Streep. Among those celebrating Kidman’s illustrious career were her husband, musician Keith Urban, and Reese Witherspoon, her co-star from the hit series Big Little Lies.
Dressed in a dazzling floor-length gold gown by Balenciaga, Kidman took the stage to express her gratitude towards the myriad of directors she has collaborated with throughout her career. She described filmmaking as a privilege and lauded the creative freedom she was afforded in portraying a wide array of unconventional roles.
“It is a privilege to make films. And glorious to have made films and television with these storytellers who allowed me to run wild and be free and play all of these unconventional women,” she said.
“Thank you for making me better at my craft and giving me a place, however temporary, in this world.”
At 56 years old, Kidman’s recognition by the AFI underscores her significant contribution to the film industry, both in Australia and internationally.
